Dear Editor,

In your recent poll for Gilroy High Athlete of the year it would be nice to list the accomplishments of these athletes. It is funny that the two that have the lowest amount of votes are two that have accomplished far more than the others.

Between Adin Duenas and Armando Gonzalez they have six Central Coast Section individual championships (eight finals appearances), four CCS team championships (breaking the team scoring record), four state medals, one national medal, two All-American certificates, four Tri-County Athletic League team championships, an undefeated four-year dual match record, and two college scholarships.

In their four years at Gilroy High they have helped to establish the school as not only a section power house but a state one as well. What do the other candidates on your list all have in common, ZERO CCS championships?

The best athlete award should go to the “BEST” athlete and not the best athlete in the most popular sport.

Mike Koester, Gilroy

The Dispatch will announce its Athletes of the Year in Friday’s

edition. The package will include sport-by-sport best athlete selections, a look back at Gilroy High’s year in sports and a listing of where some of the top athletes are headed for.
