Just Ring the Doorbell

“This is to the Red Phone caller who called and complained about the rocks in front of the home on Peregrine Dr., actually 1450 Peregrine Dr. Unfortunately every neighborhood has that one neighbor who talks to no one, but somehow always seems to be involved in everyone’s business. This one neighbor wonders why he or she is unliked by everyone around them. Next time you have an issue with me or any of your other neighbors, please feel free to ring the doorbell.”

Red Phone:

Good caller, Red Phone is happy to print your request and hopes that all future discrepancies can be solved the old fashioned way, person to person, face to face, neighbor to neighbor, but hey, at least now we all know the ins and outs of what’s allowed if you want to do a little landscaping.

Sign Clutter

“This morning’s Dispatch, Wed., I read about the signs being all over town obstructing beautiful Gilroy. I agree with the writer of that article and I would also like the city officials to pay attention to our beautiful Gilroy City Hall.

The one gorgeous landmark we have, and we have all these signs for tacos all over it. We are trying to beautify that area and we have signs posted all over it.”

Red Phone:

Contacted Mayor Al to see what he had to say about the signs in our good city.

“We are on top of it and we have already been in contact with owners. I see that sign everyday and I agree that it is a completely terrible thing to have on that building, that and many others, we have an ordinance for those things as well as the signs for furniture and other things all along the road, and we are working on getting it taken care of,” Pinheiro said.

More on Dialing 911

“On the 911 call, when you’re in Santa Clara County, 95 percent of the 911 calls from a cell phone go to Vallejo. That’s probably the reason why they didn’t get the message here in Gilroy.”

Red Phone:

Dear caller thank you for your comment on the 911 calling confusion that will hopefully be improved soon with better accommodations. Red Phone contacted Enhanced 911 coordinator Linda Olmsted once again to see if she had anything to say about this.

“‘Ninety-five percent’ by volume (prior to late 2005) would indeed have been answered in Vallejo because there are more cell phones in use in more populated, metropolitan areas. But cell sites in southern Santa Clara county were programmed to send wireless 911 calls to CHP Monterey in Salinas, not to CHP GGCC in Vallejo.”

Olmsted did say that wireless 911 calls now can be routed directly to local Public Safety Answering Points: Morgan Hill PD, San Jose PD, Gilroy PD, Santa Clara County Communications, as well as to the CHP, depending on the location of the cell site and the site sector which captured that 911 call. She did add that as mentioned previously, the carrier’s progress in implementing Enhanced 911 and other issues could be a factor in the progress of your call being re-routed.

“The boundaries are ‘fuzzy’ because cell phones move and cell sites do not… Once all the carriers have implemented Enhanced 911, whichever PSAP that gets the call can read a display showing the location of the cell site plus the latitude/longitude of the caller. Hopefully, the cell site programming will have routed the call to the correct PSAP.”

Once again caller, we are waiting for our carriers to catch up with us. Also, the number to the Gilroy Dispatch non-emergency number is 846-0350, and for emergencies dial 842-0191, it might not be a bad idea to program this into your cell phone.
