Gilroy – A pavement workers’ strike is one of several issues stalling a plan to repave 16 miles of U.S. Highway 101, from Morgan Hill south to the San Benito County line, according to a Caltrans spokesperson.

“We are at least two to three weeks out on that,” Caltrans spokesperson Brigetta Smith said Wednesday.

All of the 101 paving will be done at night, Smith said. Lane closures will be necessary, but Smith said Caltrans won’t have to close the entire highway at once except perhaps for one two-lane section south of Gilroy.

Meanwhile, in a separate project, Caltrans was scheduled to begin closing 101 exit ramps in Gilroy and Morgan Hill Wednesday night to seal cracks on the ramps. The ramps will be closed from 7pm to 7am each night of construction.

The schedule has changed numerous times, but this is the most updated version Smith was able to provide as of press time:

• 7pm Wednesday to 7am today – one or both Tenth Street off-ramps closed

• 7pm today to 7am Friday – all on- and off-ramps at the Monterey Street exit and some or all of the ramps at the Leavesley Road exit closed

No road work will be done Friday or Saturday nights, Smith said. Next week’s ramp closure schedule was not yet available, she said. She could not say definitely whether or not other 101 exits would be affected. All four Cochrane Road exit ramps are scheduled for crack sealing.
