SANTA CRUZ – They believed in magic that took them to the top of the music charts, and now The Lovin’ Spoonful brings that magic to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Friday.

The popular 1960s group featuring two of its original folk/pop stars celebrates “Summer In The City” and asks “Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?” during the Pepsi Presents: Free Friday Night Bands on the beach bandstand.

In early 1965, two rockers from Long Island, Steve Boone and Joe Butler, teamed up with two folkies from Greenwich Village, John Sabastian and Zal Yanovsy, to form The Lovin’ Spoonful. They went on to record 10 Top-10 singles in a 16-month period.

The group broke up in 1968, and for more than 20 years each member went his own way in the entertainment business. But by 1991, the lure of the live rock concert audience triggered Joe Butler to seek out his old music buddies.

Three of the original group now make up the five-piece Spoonful: vocalist Joe Butler; bassist Steve Boone; and guitarist Jerry Yester; along with musicians Mike Arturi and Phil Smith.

The Lovin’ Spoonful was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and last appeared at the Boardwalk in 1999.
