Most taxpayers have filed their 2003 tax returns, but for almost 8.5 million taxpayers who opted for the automatic extension, the deadline is Aug. 16.

This year, more than 1 million California taxpayers elected to file for the automatic four-month extension to file federal tax returns, IRS spokesperson Bill Steiner said.

“Time is running out for these taxpayers to meet the August 16, 2004 deadline,” he said.

The IRS reminds those who filed extension in April that e-filing remains available. So far this year, more than 60 million returns have been e-filed.

Those with extensions must file by Aug. 16 to avoid the late filing penalty, which is 5 percent per month of the unpaid tax. Help may be available, however, for people who cannot file by the deadline.

Taxpayers with special circumstances, such as a hardship, that prevent them from preparing and filing their tax forms by Aug. 16 may request an additional two-month extension giving them until Oct. 15 . These taxpayers will be granted an extension of time to file even if they cannot send in payment of outstanding 2003 taxes with the extension request.

To request the additional time to file, taxpayers must file with the IRS by Aug. 16. Form 2688 is available on the IRS Web site, IRS.gov. The IRS will advise filers in writing whether or not their requests are granted. Form 2688 can be filed electronically or mailed to the IRS.
