Police blotter: Child endangerment, criminal threats

The Gilroy Police Department responded to a variety of crimes over the past week, from child endangerment to possession of a controlled substance and causing willful harm to a police animal. Arrests were recorded in the GPD blotter between July 9 and 16.

Lowell T. Pederson August 17, 1941 – July 7, 2014

Lowell was born in Chicago, IL and passed away in Portland OR at the age of 72. A celebration of life  will be held in Kalama, WA at a later date.      

Getting Out: No Disney magic needed for enchanting Mineral King

If you are of a certain age, you may remember hearing about Mineral King long ago. In the 1960s, Walt Disney planned to develop a ski area in this region at the very southeast corner of the Sierra Nevada. The original proposal met no resistance from environmental groups, but when the plan grew to 27 lifts and an estimated two million visitors per year, the Sierra Club and other groups united to fight and defeat the project.

Youth Sports: Tri-ing their best

GILROY—July 12 was a special morning for Elaine Wendel’s six grandchildren. After a week-long training session—and a whole year of waiting—each awoke to new outfits which had been custom embroidered with their names on it for the 6th Annual Gilroy Kids Triathlon at Gilroy High School.

Feeling the beat

With summer in full swing, locals are invited to area downtowns to enjoy a variety of music and dancing with friends and neighbors. Mild evening temperatures make for perfect family outings, where adults can let loose following a hard day’s work and kids can dance, play and sing along to the sounds of local bands.

Band turns heads

As a rock band performs Green Day’s 1995 hit song “Brain Stew” outside of a garage on Second Street July 15, people passing by slow down. A woman walking her dog across the street stops to listen as the drummer—his hair shaped into a mohawk and dyed metallic blue—bobs his head in rhythm with the song. A few teenagers whizzing by on bikes and skateboards stop dead to watch.

Transients ticketed for sleeping in a car?

Following a recent court ruling that found the City of Los Angeles’ ban on living in a vehicle unconstitutional, local advocates for the homeless will ask Gilroy officials to stop punishing those who have no other place to sleep.
