Students learn history from the trenches

It is a gray, wet afternoon as rain drips through the redwoods on the Mount Madonna School (MMS) campus. A group of 10th- and 11th-grade students are spotted bustling outside of their classroom, full of nerves and anticipation. Most are adorned in camouflage with black smudges of paint under their eyes. To the casual observer it might appear that these students are preparing for a theatrical production. In reality, this is the beginning of a reenactment of trench warfare and is the culmination of a unit examining World War I in teacher Amy Neff's social studies course.

Youth Cheerleading: Browns take fifth at nationals

GILROY—The Gilroy Browns junior midget cheer squad went into the Pop Warner Cheer and Dance National Championships confident, but with no expectations. But when the team returned, it had a trophy with it.

Overnight shelters temporarily expand capacity due to freeze warning

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for south Santa Clara County, which remains in effect tonight through Thursday morning. Early morning lows between the mid 20s and the low 30s are anticipated—and in response, emergency overnight shelters in Gilroy and San Jose are expanding their capacity.

Murder suspect to submit a plea Jan. 13

A man suspected of stabbing a 74-year-old Gilroy woman to death is scheduled to submit a plea Jan. 13, after he turned himself in earlier this month.

Gilroy Little League will host walk-in registration from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Las Animas recreation room. 

‘I look forward with enthusiasm’ to each new painting

Artist Maralyn Miller has been captivated with painting for 65 years. She has painted in oils, acrylics and pastels, but the last few years has been doing pastels more often. Much of her art revolves around California landscapes done in a representative style.
