Youth Softball: South Valley girls finish third in World Series

SAN JOSE—Four local girls, playing for the San Jose Strikkers, claimed third place in the 10U division on July 19 at the National Softball Association’s World Series tournament in Everette, Wash.

Gilroy couple renew vows in garlic wedding

Love is many things to different people. It has inspired countless tales, Shakespearean plays and many movies. For one Gilroy couple, love holds a truly unique and aromatic meaning: garlic. And in Gilroy, love and garlic go hand-in-hand. As the Gilroy Garlic Festival began to wind down Sunday afternoon, a large crowd gathered at the main stage to witness Tom and Stacy Davenport renew their wedding vows.

Baseball: Gilroy’s Benavides makes 15U Team Trials

GILROY—Only the 40 best baseball players in the country receive an invite from USA Baseball to go to North Carolina. Gilroy’s Alex Benavides is one of the chosen few.

‘It’s all about the spices’

GILROY—Rakesh Chand and his family lamented many times about the lack of an Indian food restaurant in Gilroy. Tired of making the trek to San Jose or Fremont to enjoy a plate of authentic Indian fare, the Chands made history and opened the Garlic City’s first and only Indian restaurant, Spice ‘N Ice Bar and Grill on Fifth Street.

Police blotter: July 14 to 21

The Gilroy Police Department made arrests for a variety of crimes between July 14 and 21, including assault with a deadly weapon, rape, driving under the influence and child endangerment. Arrests were recorded in the GPD blotter during that period and compiled from public records.

Gilroy Elks Night at SJ Giants game

Join the Gilroy Elks at the San Jose Giants game Friday, July 31 and stick around for the post-game fireworks show. The Elks chose the singers to perform "God Bless America" and "Take Me Out To The Ballgame," and a very special Elk will throw out the first pitch. Attend the game and find out the identities of the mystery picks. They might just be your friends, family members or neighbors! The Elks will have a special section roped off in the general admission seats. Tickets are $5 per person. The game starts at 7 p.m. at Municipal Stadium, 588 E. Alma Ave., San Jose. Curtain Up: ‘Matilda’ well done, fascinating

Children’s story writer Roald Dahl wrote “Matilda” in 1988. This is a story turned into a musical about an abused child who is gifted and handles the terrible neglect with an abundance of charm and an ability to “always make things right.”

City hall exhibit features young artist

Artwork by 6-year-old South Bay artist Thanmay Sarath will be on display at Gilroy City Hall, 7351 Rosanna St., through Aug. 28, the fifth solo exhibition of his young career. Thanmay started working with crayons when he was 9 months old and moved on to acrylic, oil and pastel.
