GILROY—Change is in the water at Gilroy and Christopher High schools. At Gilroy, there’s a new skipper leading the Mustangs, and at Christopher, the Cougars are bracing for a tough test against new opponents in the upper Gabilan Division of the Monterey Bay League.

Meet the librarian; be a Road Scholar

Morgan Hill library gained a great asset in 2005 when Saralyn Otter, supervising children’s librarian, joined the staff. Otter received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from UCSC. She switched career gears when she followed advice from her mother, a former librarian, and signed up for a two-year library school program at San Jose State, one of only two schools in California to offer the program.

Kids Discover Arts hosts free workshops Saturday

GILROY—For the 26th consecutive year, Gilroy’s elementary school-aged children can take a break from the summer heat and hone their art skills at free workshops Saturday. Kids Discover Art, which includes 15 workshops ranging from Japanese origami to caricature drawing and pastel painting, takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the grassy area just south of the Gilroy Library and north of Gilroy City Hall. Children ages 5 through 11 are invited to participate.

Gilroy Eagle Scouts earn their wings

On Aug. 22, five local teens obtained the rank of Eagle Scout—the highest in the Boy Scouts of America program. Aakash Vashee, Richard Carini, Garrett Pipkin, Nestor Lopez and Daniel Fisser were all promoted to Eagle Scout during a ceremony at the Gilroy Elks Lodge. Each scout needed at least 21 merit badges and to complete extensive services projects to be eligible for promotion. Photos by Andrew Marquez for the Dispatch.

In Hollister, Del Webb gears up for construction

SAN BENITO COUNTY--Del Webb and San Juan Oaks Golf Club are getting set to take their final plans before county officials in the coming weeks and potentially start construction on nearly 1,100 homes and a planned senior-living community in the spring.

GILROY—Hispanic voting rights advocates have challenged a trio of draft plans for new voting districts drawn by Gavilan Community College as it carefully makes a historic switch from at-large to by-district elections for the board of trustees.
