SANTA CLARA—The San Francisco 49ers released linebacker Aldon Smith from the team Friday, following his arrest Thursday night on hit and run, driving under the influence and vandalism charges, according to Santa Clara police.
The city of Gilroy is once again asking for more of our hard-earned money. This time the facade is repair and maintenance of water and wastewater systems. Could it just be a prime opportunity to ask for more money since residents are using less, water that is?
GILROY—An attempted residential burglary Aug. 6 ignited a citywide search for three suspects who split up and fled on foot and in a stolen car—all who were were ultimately arrested, police said.

VANCOUVER, WASH.—The Gilroy Junior All Stars had an extra day of preparation—and waiting—before their first game in the Junior Western Regional tournament. While they were bouncing on their heels to take the field, the All Stars, representing Northern California, discovered the meaning of the old adage “patience is a virtue.”
GILROY—Alejandro Flores was a wanted man. He had several Southern California Division I soccer teams knocking on his door, hoping he’d suit up for them this fall. But Flores’ mother, apprehensive to have him go so far away, was praying he’d stay closer to home.
GILROY—Hundreds of children and their families descended on Fifth Street in downtown Gilroy for a community event designed to promote a positive interaction between public safety employees and residents. Attendees and organizers alike say it worked, and they are hoping someday the event will grow to include all of downtown.
SANTA CLARA—Twenty Christopher High School cheerleaders were selected to perform at the 41st annual Charlie Wedemeyer High School All-Star Football Game Aug. 1 at Levi’s Stadium.
