Huge Fire at METech Electronic Recycling

An early evening three alarm fire at an electronic recycling center filled south Gilroy skies with smoke Saturday evening and had fire officials call residents to keep them in their homes because of possible hazardous chemicals in the air.

The city of Gilroy, director Carol Romo, and more than 60 talented children from all over Gilroy and Morgan Hill opened their show, Disney’s Cinderella Kids, last week at Gilroy High School Theatre. There is one weekend left, with five more opportunities to see this hilarious adaptation of the classic tale. Shows are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1p.m. and 4 p.m. Featuring hilarious exchanges between the King and Grand Duke, adorable animals, a beautiful princess and plenty of hijinks from Cinderella’s stepsisters, this is an experience you won’t soon forget. Hospital Hurting?

The new owners of St. Louise Regional Hospital gave staff a three percent raise when they took over in December, but workers and their union are unhappy with the pace of promised improvements and afraid of painful layoffs.

Susan Steinmetz was Gilroy Clerk for 41 Years

It was the 1950s: Mt. Everest was conquered, Elvis and Disneyland became household names and Susanne Steinmetz went to work for the city of Gilroy in 1952. She was 15.

City Hall Upgrades and Senior Housing on the Tracks

Mayor Perry Woodward opened Monday’s Gilroy City Council meeting by presenting honorary certificates to Joel Goldsmith, Terri Neidigh, Alex Salinas and Claudia Salinas for their “heroic lifesaving efforts.” The quick-thinking good samaritans rushed in to perform CPR on Joe Lomeli on Feb. 26 when the 75-year-old retired AT&T engineer suddenly collapsed at Snap Fitness.
