Year in Review: 2016

So many of us can’t wait to get 2016 behind us, but there was plenty for locals to remember fondly in the sports world.

Aaron Rodriguez was selling sushi out of his house while he was still in high school. He was building a business and clientele before most kids even entertain the thought of culinary school. Rodriguez, 20, says it was the support of his clients that encouraged him to pursue being a chef.

Generous gestures

As the year winds down, I find myself in a reflective mood. Maybe it is due to hearing renditions of “Auld Lang Syne” everywhere I go. Here at Live Oak Adult Day Services, we welcomed many new seniors this year and we, sadly, have mourned the loss of others. The staff here is often asked how we cope with such loss. Basically, we focus on making each day special for the seniors here, and when they are no longer with us we know that we helped them to feel appreciated while they were part of the program. Those thoughts console us.

New rates?

In this space a month or so ago we asked the question: what will happen to rates? The answer for the past few weeks since the election has been, they are going up.

Ring in the New Year

As the whirlwind year of 2016 finally comes to a close, we’ve been witness to an impressive series of monumental happenings in world history, sports, entertainment and of course politics. For those that have been too caught up to make plans to ring in the New Year, here’s a list of local events to raise a glass for “Auld Lang Syne.”

Phyllis M. Teshima March 6, 1937 – December 28, 2016

Phyllis M. Teshima of San Juan Bautista, beloved wife of the late Kenneth Teshima, passed away unexpectedly in Salinas, CA on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the age of 79 years. Phyllis was a native of Hollister, a lifelong resident of San Benito County, a graduate of Hollister High School, she was a homemaker most of her life.

Tom Tadashi Tanimura January 18, 1928 – December 26, 2016

It is with great sadness that the Tanimura family announces the loss of Tom Tanimura. He was known to all as Tommy and was the last of the legacy known as the Tanimura brothers. Tommy passed away peacefully in his sleep in Salinas, California on Monday, December 26, 2016 at the age of 88.
