Dear Editor,
Earlier this school year, Gilroy High School Parent Club members decided we wanted to provide our children with an opportunity for them to think about their interests and abilities in relation to potential careers.
As members of the Gilroy Community, we understand the benefit of providing our youth with opportunities that will enable them to reach their maximum potential. Recognizing that for many students attending a career fair might be the only way they would be exposed to career and life options, we assumed the task of organizing and implementing the First Annual GHS Parent Club Career Fair on Thursday, April 28. Due to the efforts of community groups, GHS staff and dedicated parents, it was a tremendous success – 336 students attended. Fifty-seven presenters took the time from their busy schedules to provide career guidance and share life experiences with our students.
The Career Fair could not have taken place without the generous support form Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, Gilroy Rotary Club, St. Joseph’s Center, and ConAgra Foods. Many thanks to Bonfante Gardens, Michele Ing of Edward Jones Investments, Home Inspections Services, Kaiser Permanente, KBAY/KEZR, Nutrition and Wellness Unit Santa Clara County Health Department, NW Photography and Ernie Olivares for donating raffle prizes. A special thanks to the presenters (comprised mostly of Gilroy community members) who donated their time and shared their wisdom. We are indebted to Susan Valenta, executive director of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce and Lucia Aguilar-Navarro, Gavilan College outreach coordinator. Their assistance was vital to the event’s success. We appreciate the parents whose efficient work allowed registration to run smoothly.
Finally, a few words to the students: Thank you for attending, for being attentive to our guest speakers and for asking excellent questions. This career fair was a labor of love for us and our gift to you. We hope the event provided you with the insight that the future holds many wonderful options for you, and that with desire and hard work any dream can come true.
