Dear Editor,

Regarding the letter to the editor written by Bob Winter a while back headlined “A little perspective and a salute for decision on Wal-Mart Supercenter,” indeed my Uncle Ormond Rector managed to keep the Red and White Grocery Store open in Gilroy despite new competition because of his wonderful personality.

It was really strange and very nice to hear someone remember my uncle from so many years ago on your editorial page.

Only one error I felt I needed to correct. Uncle Ormond moved to Menlo Park, California and opened a small market which did very well – but it was small. He later opened a larger market in Los Altos and operated it until he retired and recently passed away.

Rector Cadillac of San Mateo, which was already there, was owned by someone who was not related to us. However, Uncle Ormond always purchased his new Cadillac there.

He loved Gilroy and we all have fond memories of visiting there in the good old days of the ’40s. He kept many friends in Gilroy and still visited often.

Thank you for keeping his memory alive and printing a nice article about him.

Michael Rector, Emerald Hills, CA
