Some coaches might have a problem with a team taking as many three-pointers as the Gilroy girls basketball team has in the past few games.

But not Mustang coach Kari Williams.

“They’re taking really good shots and I have no problem with them,” said Williams, whose team went 2-0 in the opening rounds of the Burlingame Invite. “We’re either going to make it or we’ve got a good chance of getting the rebound.”

Hot shooting fueled Gilroy’s 62-50 win over Kennedy Wednesday and its 69-36 blowout of Monta Vista yesterday. With the wins, Gilroy extended its undefeated record to 9-0.

Against Kennedy, sophomore guard Vanessa Wilkins (18 points) and senior forward Katherine Hussey (11 points) each had three treys. Against Monta Vista, Hussey again had three and senior point guard Kristen Campos had five.

In the first round of the invite Wednesday, Kennedy held a 5-point lead through the first quarter and a half. But in the last 2:30 of the half, the Mustangs rallied and led 30-23 going into the locker room.

Kennedy didn’t help its cause in the second half by sending the Mustangs to the line 15 times in the fourth quarter. Gilroy made 11 of those shots. Forward Dana Schoeneman (10 points) was a perfect 6-for-6.

“There was a lot of fouls in the game,” Williams said. “Overall, it was a pretty physical game. The team did a good job handling them.”

Forward Jessica Groppe added 10 points against Kennedy.

Against Monta Vista, Campos and Hussey were the leading scorers with 17 points apiece. Wilkins (9 points), Groppe (8 points) and Schoeneman (8 points) also contributed.

Gilroy plays today at 6:30pm against the winner of last night’s Buringame/Menlo game.
