The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the situation with downtown parking. Employers simply must realize that they cannot allow their employees to take prime parking spots for eight hours at the expense of businesses that rely on customer traffic.

CHEERS: For all those who support Operation Interdependence. Want to boost the spirits of our overseas troops during the holidays – and your own spirit? Show up on Sunday, Nov. 5, from 2 to 5pm, at 8075 Camino Arroyo (behind the old Wal-Mart) and help package Thanksgiving Day treats for the troops. Can’t make it? How about dropping off a letter, snack-size jerky or sunflower seeds and assorted nuts. Small gestures mean so much to those who are away. More info: www.oidelivers.org.

CHEERS: For the Gilroy Police Department’s crackdown on speeders, particularly around our schools. Around town, it’s clear there’s a heightened awareness regarding traffic safety, and that’s due to GPD’s rekindled vigor with regards to enforcement. Let’s be safe out there.

JEERS: For the news that campaigns are using e-mail addresses for junk political mail. The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters asks for e-mail addresses on the voter registration form then sells that information to campaigns. The Audubon Society used e-mail, for example, to promote Measure A this month. Think selling e-mail addresses is for the birds? Call the registrar at 299-VOTE or

e-mail re*******@ro*.org.

JEERS: For the way in which the Gilroy Unified School District handled the business before the school naming committee. Why invite the public to be a part of the process, then turn around, violate the state’s open meeting laws and try to keep the proceedings secret? It’s not about the school district per se, folks, it’s about the community, and it’s about open communication.

JEERS: For the sad fact that our school communities have become targets for the deranged. Physical threats to principals, cowardly, hate-filled e-mails targeting a new teacher at Gilroy High School and a bomb found near Rucker School. Hopefully, the perpetrators will be caught and duly punished.
