Leading by example

Gilroy – Katelyn Davey, Evan Mulch, Matt Orsetti and Dana Roberts, of the Gilroy FFA Chapter, recently attended the Advanced Leadership Academy. The two-day experience in leadership training took place at the Double Tree Hotel in Modesto. Conference participants focused on Agricultural Issues, critical thinking, effective debating and established plans to promote agricultural literacy.

Throughout the year, these future leaders will work with local chapter members and community leaders in an effort to enhance the public’s knowledge base of agriculture. Help identify those from Gilroy’s past

Gilroy – On Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m.in the Gilroy Museum, the public is invited to see the The Gilroy Historical Society’s premiere of “Scenes From Gilroy Past”, four glimpses into Gilroy’s yesteryears made possible by a grant from the Gilroy Foundation.

Popcorn and soda will be served. Copies of the film will be on sale at the Museum.

Four reels of film were transferred and compiled into a single digital video disc, no footage was edited out, simple titles between sequences are the only addition. The sequences are: Gilroy Gymkhana (14 minutes, from the mid-1950s); Gilroy National Guard at Camp San Luis Obispo (5.5 minutes, probably early 1940s); Armistice Day (4 minutes, probably early 1920s); and Football (4 minutes, probably early 1920s).

The Society is anxious for viewers who will help answer the who, when, and where questions that remain about the films:

– What is the date of the Gymkhana in the film?

– When was the footage shot at Camp San Luis Obispo and who are the people that appear?

– What year was the Armistice Day film made and is anyone still living who was in the “battle” or the long line of cars lined up for viewing it?

– When did Gilroy High School win a championship and who are these sports stars? The film can was labeled “1911 GHS Championship Football Team”, but it included the scenes of Armistice Day and this holiday was not declared till 1919.

Once more is known about the films, the society plans to add narration and sound track.
