Drill alerts students, parents

Gilroy – The first lockdown drill at Gilroy High School Wednesday morning caused anxious students to call their parents, alerting them of the new procedure. Despite notification to students over the intercom and from teachers, some students misunderstood that the lockdown was a drill and sent text messages to their parents.

During the mini-drill at 8:30am Wednesday, the lights were shut off and classroom doors locked. Administrators visited classrooms to ensure proper procedures were followed.

A complete lockdown drill will be performed later in the year.

During that drill, which is considered a code red, the doors will be barricaded and students and staff directed to stay away from the windows.

Lockdowns are designed to provide a secure environment for students and staff during emergency situations such as intruders on campus.

GHS experienced its first lockdown May 14, 2004 after a student called 911 and threatened to shoot her cooking teacher. Three juvenile students were arrested six hours later, in what turned out to be a prank call.

Program addresses homelessness

San Jose – The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved establishing a $4 million Housing the Homeless Mentally Ill Fund Tuesday.

The County’s Mental Health Department and Office of Affordable Housing collaborated to create the new program that will address the factors contributing to homelessness.

“This is an important collaboration,” said Supervisor Jim Beall. “If we are going to be able to make a real and lasting impact on the problem of homelessness, we have to address the underlying issues.”

The Homeless Census and Survey conducted one year ago reported that 75 percent of homeless suffer from a disabling condition such as alcoholism, drug addiction, or a physical or mental disability.

One quarter of those surveyed cited alcoholism, drug use or mental illness as the primary reason that led to their homelessness.
