CALLER 1: I’m not calling about a beef. I think it’s very nice that you’re going to chose from each city, Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister some of the highlights of the year 2005. But I did want to make a little correction. This is in no way a criticism, but in the Gilroy’s first nominated group, you have “Gilroy Little League softball team goes to the World Series.” And that is correct, but I think “girls” should have been put in there because that’s what they were. It was a group of 11- and 12-year-old girls. Normally, people when they see “Little League,” boys come to mind. But in this case, it was the girls. I think your choices are great and I just wanted to call that to your attention.
GREEN PHONE: Thanks, Caller 1. You bring up an interesting point. The reason we don’t say “girls” softball in referring to the championship caliber Little League squad is because when you say softball in Little League it’s understood that it has to be all girls. Now when you get into adult leagues like us old men play then you have to stipulate men or women because both have softball leagues. Thanks for your call and keep voting.
CALLER 2: Hello, I want to call and cast my vote for the Gilroy Little League softball team that went to the World Series. Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: We will take your vote into account, Caller 3. For everyone else, visit www.gilroydispatch.com and cast your vote in the Readers’ Poll for which Gilroy sports story you think was tops in 2005.
CALLER 3: Hi, I just wanted to find out why there hasn’t been any coverage of the Gilroy Browns this year. This is the younger crowd, I realize, younger than the high schools, but they work just as hard and had several football teams that made it to the playoffs this year and they had one cheerleading team that made it to regionals. We did call a few times, e-mail pictures and have not seen hardly anything about the Gilroy Browns in the paper this year. There may have been one or two articles in the beginning, but I didn’t see them. But at the end of the season surely there should have been one about the cheerleading team that made it to regionals. They placed third there and had a great time, a great season and it’s been a long time since that’s happened. So it would have been really nice to see that in our local paper.
GREEN PHONE: Thanks for phoning in, Caller 3. At the beginning of the Gilroy Browns season, we did receive game info and pictures via e-mail and we ran weekly updates from what we received. But as the season went on, no information was sent from the Browns. As we have said before, it’s a two-way street with community sports. Because there are so many Pop Warner, Little League, National Junior Basketball, etc. teams, we need you, the reader, to help get us results. That said, we will try to do a better job from our end in opening the lines of communication.
