Five vie for four GUSD board seats

Gilroy – Locals interested in running in the Gilroy Unified School District board race may have an extra five days to decide whether to file. Only two of the four incumbents up for reelection have dropped off papers at the county office.

Under the registrar’s guidelines, if those two remaining incumbents don’t sign-up by Friday at 5pm, the filing period deadline will be extended to Wednesday at 5pm. David McRae and Jim Rogers, the two incumbents who have yet to file, will not be able to file after the Friday deadline.

McRae has confirmed that he won’t seek reelection while Rogers is on the fence and is on vacation this week. Incumbents Tom Bundros and Javier Aguirre have both filed.

New candidates who have filed include Denise Apuzzo, Francisco Dominguez and Ardy Ghoreishi.

SV Symphony rehearsals begin

Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will commence rehearsals Wednesday, Aug. 30. Openings exist for violin, viola, and cello and contrabass positions. Openings also exist for French horn, trumpet and trombone positions in the brass section. The woodwind section currently has openings in the clarinet and oboe sections.

All players interested in trying out for these positions should contact John Graham at (831) 623-4062. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 7:30 pm to 9:45pm at the Ascension Solorsano band room, 7121 Grenache Way.

South Valley Republicans meet

Gilroy – The South Valley Republican Women’s Federated Club invites Republican men and women to join their monthly meetings. The next meeting is Saturday, at Mama Mia’s, 1360 First St. A social begins at 11:30am, and a guest speaker and lunch begin at 12pm. Cost for members is $20, non-member is $25. An annual membership is $15.

Texas Hold ‘Em Showdown

Gilroy – Register now for the 2nd annual End of Summer No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Showdown that will be held at 10am Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Gilroy Senior Center. The event offers teams of four players an opportunity to play Texas Hold ‘Em, with all proceeds going to city youth, teen and senior programs. Persons 18 and older are eligible to play. Team registration is $60. Register at the Gilroy Community Services Department.

Gilroy – Join the Santa Clara County Parks Mounted Ranger Unit on a ride through the hills to explore geological features at Coyote-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park Saturday, Aug. 26, from 9:30 to 11am. Ride leaves from Roop Road staging area at 9:30am sharp. Reservation required, no horse rentals are available, must bring your own horse and equipment.

Morgan Hill – Explore canyon waterfalls and wildlife on this 2-mile hike with a ranger at Uvas Canyon County Park Sunday, Aug. 20, from 10am to noon. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection, water. Meet at the day-use parking lot. $5 parking fee per vehicle.
