Watching for weather

Every evening on KSBW-8 in Salinas, they have the Weather Watch.
The information is from all over the Central Coast and comes from
computer hook ups with schools. Who’s missing? Gilroy. Why doesn’t
the Gilroy Unified School District have at least one school
participating? Thank you.

Watching for weather

“Every evening on KSBW-8 in Salinas, they have the Weather Watch. The information is from all over the Central Coast and comes from computer hook ups with schools. Who’s missing? Gilroy. Why doesn’t the Gilroy Unified School District have at least one school participating? Thank you.”

Red Phone:

It contacted Jim Vanderzwaan, KSBW’s lead forecaster, for an explanation.

He said he assumes you’re referring to the WeatherNet 8 network of observation sites. In an e-mail he explained that those stations are located at school sites in the area and “are purchased and maintained by each school and we access the data via Internet.”

Vanderzwaan wrote that “Gilroy is high on the list of sites under consideration, but I do not yet have a time line on site selection and activation of the new system. In any event, we still have observations from Gilroy for our minimum/maximum temperatures and rainfall and hopefully will add hourly data in the future.”

Name those offenders!

“Hi, you ran a story in the Thursday paper about the firework citations passed out. Are you going to run another story later on with names and addresses of all those who were cited? Bye.”

Red Phone:

Ask and you shall receive, good caller. You can find a list of those cited on page 5 of today’s paper.

Light kudos

“Hey Red Phone. I just wanted to say that I really like the left hand turn signal at 10th and Princevalle. It caught me by surprise but I think it’s a really good deal for Gilroy and congestion at the high school. Congrats Gilroy. Good job.”

Red Phone:

Your Red Phone agrees the signal light was a great idea at that intersection and will likely prevent accidents and traffic backup.

The recent death of 5-year-old Brayan Trejo at 10th and Church streets has the city considering a left turn signal at that intersection as well.

Handicap access

“Who is in charge of making the blue doctors’ office building, the one on Sixth and Princevalle, handicapped accessible? The parking lot has handicapped parking if you can see it, the paint in the entire lot is practically nonexistent. But for those handicapped parking spots, there are no ramps. And each office has about two steps to enter the building. Is this ADA compliant? Thanks for your help. Appreciate it.”

Red Phone:

City Transportation Engineer Don Dey said that generally “the private property owner is responsible for all ADA access on their property, whether it’s the parking lot, the entrance to the building or the facilities inside.”

For more information on ADA compliance, contact Building Department head Stephen Lau at 846-0258.
