Baseball Comes Up Short Against Salinas
The Mustang offense jumped all over San Benito’s pitching in the early innings against the ‘Balers Thursday, but it couldn’t repeat the trend Friday against Salinas.
Gilroy attempted to work its way out of a 4-0 deficit in Salinas against the Cowboys in the seventh inning. However, the Mustangs could only muster three runs to ultimately fall 4-3.
“We didn’t hit very well,” said Gilroy head coach Clint Wheeler. “It was a long week.”
The win helped the Cowboys (16-6-1, 7-5-1 TCAL) get even with Gilroy (11-9, 7-5 TCAL) in the league standings. Both teams sit behind San Benito and Palma.
Junior Ryan Evanger led Gilroy with two hits. Senior Josh Sterling and junior Matt Hemeon had a hit apiece to round out Gilroy’s hit total of four.
Salinas scored its runs in the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, the Cowboys hit a two-run double to take a 2-0 lead and stretched that to 4-0 in the sixth on a two-run triple. Both hits were off Gilroy starting pitcher Jeremy Teschera, who took the loss.
In the top of the seventh, Gilroy loaded the bases after its first two batters, sophomore Kevin Grove and junior Michael Stevens, were hit by pitches and Sterling got on with an infield single. Salinas then hit the third Gilroy batter of the inning, senior Chris Hernandez, to score Grove. Evanger followed with an RBI single. That brought up senior Drew Andersen, who struck out for the first out. Hemeon singled to drive in Gilroy’s last run.
With the bases still loaded and one out against them, the Mustangs couldn’t get any more runs across.
“We left a lot of guys on base,” Wheeler said.
Gilroy, which has six games left, takes on Live Oak in Morgan Hill Monday at 4pm.
GHS Track and Field Sweeps Sobrato
Gilroy enjoyed success on its home track Thursday, with the varsity boys (107-28), varsity girls (84-50), frosh/soph boys (88-22) and JV girls (76-10) all earning team wins over Sobrato.
In the varsity boys’ competition, senior thrower Bobby Best won the shot put (52-6 feet) and the discus (162-9). Steven Heisey took the 400 in 56.04. Chris Funk set personal best marks en route to winning the long jump (19-8) and the triple jump (40-7).
Freshmen Kathleen Miller and Ariana Vera both won multiple events in the varsity girls’ competition. Vera swept the 100- and 200-meter sprinting events while Miller swept the distance events (800, 1600 and 3200). In the shot put, Jasmine Ross set a personal best mark of 28-9 to win the event.
