Gilroy – The Educators’ Financial Survival Conference will take place at the Westside Grill Restaurant in Gilroy, Tuesday at 5:30pm and a complimentary dinner at 6:30pm.
The conference will focus on the 2006 changes in IRS code that can affect retire. In addition, they will provide a comprehensive review of all 2006 income tax, social security, and Medicare changes.
Seating is limited and nothing will be sold at this free seminar.

Adult literacy tutors needed

Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Parent Club is staging a Candidates’ Forum Wednesday at 7:30pm in the high school library. A five minute per candidate introduction period will be followed by an hour long question and answer period. The questions will be posed by the audience.

Event benefits Gilroy Foundation
Gilroy – The Gilroy Foundation is hosting its annual fundraiser “A Day In The Country” at Fortino Winery Saturday, Sept. 30 at 5pm. The evening begins with hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting and a silent auction, with music provided by “Open Invitation.”
All proceeds benefit The Gilroy Foundation, a community organization that serves the needs of local nonprofits through yearly grants. The Gilroy Foundation was established in 1980 to help meet the growing needs of our community in the areas of health, education, recreation, culture and civic services.
Fortino Winery is located at 4525 Pacheco Pass Highway. Tickets are $100 per person and may be purchased by calling 842-3727.

Practice skills at Bicycle Rodeo
Gilroy – Join the Gilroy Police Department’s bicycle patrol officers, the California Highway Patrol and the Gilroy Fire Department for the annual Bicycle Rodeo, from 11am to 2pm Saturday, Sept. 30.
Children of all ages can bring their bicycles and complete the “Safe Moves City” safety course, that includes the correct method of crossing intersections, railroad crossings, and what to do near school buses and emergency vehicles, and many other skills related to bicycle safety. There also will be free license registration and bicycle inspection The day includes free hot dogs and drinks to all participants.
The event takes place at Eliot Elementary School, 475 Old Gilroy St., corner of Chestnut and E. Seventh Street.
Cub Scout recruitment night
Gilroy – Cub Scouts is open to boys in grades one through five. The Gavilan District’s recruitment night is 7pm Wednesday at the Masonic Temple, 8347 Wren Ave.

A STAR program for local youth
Gilroy – The Gavilan STAR Program is now accepting registration for Fall STAR 2006. Saturday, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 9am to 12pm, cost $99. Fall STAR is a Saturday morning acting workshop for students ages 8-16. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of theatre and participate in writing and rehearsing Halloween themed skits. Fall STAR ends with a final performance in the Gav TV studio.
