Eduardo Carmona Garcia is thought to be Gilroy resident
Gilroy – A man killed by a Union Pacific freight train as he walked along the tracks at Sixth Street has been identified, a representative of the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday morning.

Eduardo Carmona Garcia, 29, was struck by the train about 5:30pm Friday, according to Gilroy Police Sgt. Kurt Svardal.

Garcia is believed to have been a resident of Gilroy, the Coroner’s Office representative said. No information about his family was available by press time.

Svardal said the Gilroy Police Department does not have any information about Garcia’s family.

“If it’s not a homicide, we don’t have an opportunity to get to know the family,” he said.

GPD officers responded to a report that a pedestrian had been hit by a train. Medical personnel at the scene tried to revive Garcia, but could not, Svardal said.

What police have been able to determine through investigation, Svardal said, is that Garcia was walking along the tracks as a train was coming behind him, traveling the same direction. The train operators saw Garcia, they told police, and sounded the horn. Garcia reportedly did not turn around but waved his hand, as if acknowledging the train.

Svardal said there are two tracks together in that area, and Garcia may have thought the train was on the adjacent tracks.

Operators attempted to stop the train, but the distance was too short, and they were unable to bring it to a stop before Garcia was hit.
