Gilroy High School’s junior varsity football team is off to a great start this season.
The Junior Mustangs defeated Woodside High School 32-6, giving them a 2-0 record so far. GHS has outscored the opposition 66-12 in the first two games. At half time they lead with a 26-0 lead and finished out the game 32-6.
“We have a lot of talent,” said junior varsity coach Jack Daley. “We have to learn how to play together as a team. We have to learn how to work hard at practice to be a very good team.”
Sophomore quarterback Steven Martinez ran for a 10-yard touchdown and threw TD passes to Tyler Hill and Juan Delgado for the Mustangs, who led 26-0 at halftime. Sophomore Sean Hale scored on a 10-yard touchdown and sophomore Richard Soleto scored on a 30-yard run.
“I think we have the most talent we have had as a whole group in a couple years,” said Daley.
The junior varsity will join the varsity tonight as the travel to San Jose to face Oak Grove High School.
On Wednesday, the JV girls volleyball lost to Sobrato High School 25-17, 25-13.
Junior varsity boys and girls water polo teams defeated Monterey on Tuesday. The girls’ team won 12-3 as sophomore Alex Marshall led the team in goals by scoring six points. Marla Taourmag added three goals for the Mustangs. Goalie Weiland Cui had eight blocks.
“They played hard,” said head coach Andy Been. “They were ready for this game.”
The boys took an early 6-0 lead and beat Monterey 10-5. Matt Dickson and David Tolson-Solis each scored four goals.
