With an impressive 8-1 record in 2003, garlic boxer recognized
for ring dedication
GILROY – Month by month, world champion Kelsey Jeffries has added to her impressive fight record, taking on nine opponents this year alone.
Tagged the ‘Road Warrior’, Jeffries has kept true to her name, traveling far and wide to square off against fighters big and small. Most recently, the garlic slinger, who resides in Hollister and trains at the Gilroy Community Youth Center gymnasium on Sixth Street, recorded the second technical knockout of her career.
Jeffries floored Seattle’s Carla Wilcox in the first round and then poured on even more punishment when she got to her feet until the referee stopped the fight. It was Jeffries’ 24th career victory and eighth in 2003.
Her active ring life was recognized when the IFBA named the 126-pound featherweight champion its Fighter of the Year.
Jeffries has defended her IFBA title twice this year, defeating both Rolanda Andrews and Kelli Cofer by unanimous decision.
Last weekend, Jeffries graduated from the fire academy and hopes to land a firefighter job either in Gilroy or Hollister.
But that is not to get in the way of her boxing career as Jeffries plans to fight abroad either in January in Nigeria, Africa or in February in Japan. The women’s champion holds four championship belts, the 126-pound IFBA world title, the 126-pound California state title, the 126-pound WIBF America’s title, and the 130-pound WIBA Intercontinental title.
A regular on the ‘Fight Night At The Tank’ series, presented by Oscar De La Hoya Promotions, Jeffries intends on acquiring several more championship belts before her career ends. Undefeated in four fights in San Jose, Jeffries has also made it a personal goal to bring respectability to the world of women’s boxing.
