Rucker presents annual play

presenting its annual play Feb. 14 and 15 at the school. This
year’s performance is

Wind of a Thousand Tales

by John Glore, music and lyrics by Diane King. The play directed
by Pepe Espinosa showcases folk tales and myths from around the
world. Show time for Friday, Feb. 14, is 7:30 p.m. On Saturday,
Feb. 15, shows are at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5, children pay
$3. The school is located at 325 Santa Clara Ave., east of Monterey
Street. The annual play is a more than 100-year -old tradition at
the school. Performances Feb. 11 to 14 will be put on for students

Tickets for ‘Miracle worker’

GILROY – Odyssey Theatre Company’s winter Main Stage Production of “The Miracle Worker” will run for one more weekend. “The Miracle Worker,” by William Gibson, is based on the true story of Annie Sullivan’s heroic efforts to teach her new pupil, young Helen Keller. “Miracle Worker” will be performed Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. in the Gilroy High School theater. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. Closing night will be “signed” by an American Sign Language interpreter. Firemen’s ball

GILROY – The Gilroy Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary will hold the Firemen’s Ball from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Gilroy Elks Lodge, and one lucky attendee will leave with the keys to a new car. South County Chrysler has donated a Honda electric car for the emergency relief fund raffle, which will take place during the ball. Proceeds from the event will be given to families as a disaster relief fund. The event will begin with no-host cocktails from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by steak and scampi or pasta primavera from 7 to 9 p.m. The emergency relief raffle fund will begin just after 8 p.m. and there will be dance music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets to the ball are $40 per person.

Pairing chocolate with wine

GILROY – Solis Winery will offer decadent chocolate desserts with Solis varietals on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8 and 9 during their regular tasting hours, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free to Solis wine club members and $5 to nonmembers. Swing your valentine

GILROY – The Senior Center Valentine Dinner Dance will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. The cost is $5 per person. GILROY – The City of Gilroy Community Services Department is putting on an Exhibition of Local Talent, featuring the work of young artists 5 to 18 years of age. GILROY – The Gilroy Assistance League is now selling throw blankets to raise funds for local youth charities. The Gilroy Assistance League is a nonprofit organization which gives out yearly grants to help support many children’s and youth groups in Gilroy. These throws sell for $60. Donate used cell phones

GILROY – Community Solutions is holding a cell phone drive throughout Gilroy and Morgan Hill. The Shelter Alliance will give Community Solutions between 50 cents and $20 for each phone collected, which will be used to pay for clothing, shelter, food, children’s toys, diapers, and other needed supplies. In Gilroy, cell phones are being collected at Safeway at 905 First St., Cellular Universe at 1205 C First St., and Community Solutions at 6980 Chestnut Ave. Please donate phones that are less than five years old. ‘Author!’ ads

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Art and Literary Guild is offering a win-win opportunity for local businesses wanting to get their name out and support a local cause at the same time. The Guild publishes a yearly magazine – called “Author! Author!” – featuring the art and writing of GHS students. It needs financial help in producing the multi-section glossy. Donations of any amount are appreciated and ad space will be given for any donation over $25. Standard advertisements are business-card size. Sponsor kids’ Rod’s Trod

GILROY – Rod Kelley School is having its annual “Rod’s Trod,” a benefit walk-a-thon on Saturday, March 29. During the event, students walk laps around the field to earn donations from friends and family. Local companies and organizations can help the school by sponsoring students or donating services. Local companies can become sponsors for the Rod’s Trod with a minimum $200 donation. In exchange, the school will list sponsoring businesses on the official event T-shirts. Also, any services or goods that could be donated are welcome. The deadline for donations is Feb. 15. Details: 848-6483.
