GILROY – Odyssey Theatre Company and the Gilroy High School Theatre Department present “Smile and Nod” for an evening of improv comedy. The show will take place today at 8 p.m. at the GHS Theater.

Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. All proceeds go to the Odyssey Theatre Company Summer Conservatory, a six-week program designed to provide in-depth training in theater arts to young adults. MACSA honors educators

GILROY – MACSA will hold its first South County Gala Fundraiser “Celebrating Culture Through Education” today from 6 to 10 p.m. at the IFDES Lodge, 250 Old Gilroy St. Join them to honor and celebrate com-munity heroes in education.

Save on soccer

GILROY – Sign-ups are being taken for fall soccer for Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League. The cost before Monday, June 30, is $95 per first and second, $60 for third and more players. After June 30, the cost is $120 provided space is available. Boys and girls age 5 to 15 are eligible.

Tour historic ruins

GILROY – Explore the historic Miller Estate ruins with a park ranger from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 28, and learn about the rich cultural history of Mt. Madonna County Park.

Meet at the Park Office/Visitor Center at 10 a.m. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for an easy walk from the park office to the Miller ruins. Appropriate for all ages and abilities. Dogs are OK. There is a $4 vehicle fee. Details: 842-2341.

Go fly a kite – really!

GILROY – Pacheco State Park will hold its second annual family Kite Day on Saturday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone who flies a kite receives a souvenir. There will be a prize for best kite made by an individual 15 and under, best kite made by an individual over 15 and best kite made by a group. Bring your family, kites, drinking water, picnic lunch and blanket. Pacheco State Park is on Highway 152 between Gilroy and Los Banos. Turn south at the Dinosaur Point sign and follow the kites. Children dive into books

GILROY – The Wize Owl bookstore is holding a summer reading adventure now through Saturday, Aug. 16. Children from pre-kindergarten to eighth-grade can sign up at the store to receive their reading log. Each time they bring the chart into the store, the number of completed books will be recorded and children can choose a prize from the “owl’s nest.” Those who read 10 books by Aug. 16 will be entered in the grand-prize drawing for Wize Owl gift certificates. Shelter hosts rummage sale

SAN MARTIN – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter is holding its second annual rummage sale on Saturday, June 28, beginning at 8 a.m. at the San Martin Animal Shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave. Shop for bargains, meet the volunteers and visit with some of the wonderful animals available for adoption. Bottle your own red wine

MORGAN HILL – Guglielmo Winery is inviting the public to bottle their own wine on Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring your own clean bottle or purchase an empty one there. The wine, a dry red from the Santa Clara Valley, will sell for $5 per 750 milliliters. This would typically sell for $10 to $12.

The winery is also offering two sneak preview weekends Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29 and July 5 and 6 to taste the wine that will be offered at the bottle-your-own event. Drop by the tasting room and ask for a sample from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. either weekend. Guglielmo Winery is located at 1480 E. Main Ave. Details: 779-2145.
