Dear Editor:

I would like to thank the Gilroy Police and Fire Departments for their commitment to the public. My neighborhood had a meeting on June 4 to help residents become familiar with the departments and the services that they offer.

The police department covered neighborhood safety and calls for service and the fire department covered home fire safety and paramedic services. The fire department personnel were a well organized and cohesive team of individuals.

It was evident that their down time is spent in training, as Cpt. Clay told us of his team. The task of turning Engine #61 in a small cul-de-sac was a team effort and they made it look easy.

Yvette Phillips from fire and Rachel Munoz from police are stars in their organizations. They have a passion for communicating information which could easily become monotonous, but their enthusiasm really gets and keeps people’s interest. They can really work a crowd, even with vast diversity of young, old, male, female, etc.

Sgt. Castaneda and Patty, the dispatcher of the year, embodied Chief Giusiana’s message of “… actively seek(ing) opportunities to be involved in our neighborhoods and to work in partnerships with our citizens to increase public safety and to maintain the highest possible quality of life in our community.”

They gave us practical solutions for problems, but instilled that it has to be a team effort and we are all part of the team. Too many times, these people are only able to interact with the public when we are in trouble or causing trouble, but they definitely shine in all aspects of their duties. Thanks to the Engine #61 crew, Captain Clay, Officer Deras, in addition to the names already mentioned! We have a GREAT city in Gilroy and we have wonderful people keeping us safe and secure.
