The Red Dogz edged the Stray Cats 2-1 in eight innings Sunday to
earn the championship of the 3rd annual Spring 16 Softball
Tournament at Christmas Hill Park.
GILROY – The Red Dogz edged the Stray Cats 2-1 in eight innings Sunday to earn the championship of the 3rd annual Spring 16 Softball Tournament at Christmas Hill Park.
Ruben Ramirez doubled and scored on an infield grounder in the top of the eighth as the Red Dogz completed a 5-0 performance for the one-day event. The Stray Cats finished the 12-team tournament with a 5-2 mark.
The tournament, featuring a 16-inch softball rather than the 12-inch ball used in men’s slowpitch leagues, covered five diamonds.
Eight companies and organizations made donations to the event to insure its continued success. Sponsors included Digital Optics, Sport Shack, HMI, Elam Trucking, Century 21 Premier, Cary O’Neal Roofing, California Silk Screening and Fritter-Schulz Physical Therapy.
The Red Dogs opened play with a 7-0 nod over Krazy Koyotes in the 9 a.m. contest. Gabe Ponce powered three Dogz hits.
The Red Dogz followed with a 2-0 blanking of Lopez Vending Machines, led by two hits from George Salgado.
The Red Dogz lost a 14-inning scoreless mark when Ryan Stenn’s RBI-single gave the Stray Cats a first-inning run. The Dogz took the game 9-3 behind a three-run home run from Salgado.
Scott Perkins hit a two-run homer to lead the Red Dogz by Poor Sports-FOG 4-2 to earn a spot in the finals.
Al Lopez and Jason Warren drilled three hits apiece as the Stray Cats clipped Lopez Vending Machines 7-6, leaving Lopez Vending with the fourth-place award.
Ryan Dequin singled and doubled to help the Stray Cats into the finals with a 9-3 win over Poor Sports-FOG.
Interstate Fence opened the Men’s BB League second half with an 18-7 nod over the Playaz at Las Animas Park. Simon Hernandez hit a home run, double and two singles, Carlos Garcia went 4-for-5 and Eddy Gamboa homered for the Fence. Louie Catano homered for the Playaz.
Obata Farms earned a forfeit win over Little Pizzarena.
The Gilroy Clippers moved to 2-0 atop the Men’s C League Friday at Gavilan Sports Park with an 11-8 verdict over the Kenko Pipelayers.
Joe Ojeda went 4-for-4, Andrew Ornelas 3-for-3 for the Clippers. Nate Suarez went 3-for-3, Matt Hernandez 3-for-4 for Kenko.
Al Sirwet and Ed Schrewsbury hit home runs to lead 7-0 Puzzle Systems by AAA Courier Poor Boys 187. Shawn Tinseley powered a homer and single for the Poor Boys.
Ben Roybal singled and scored on a Greg Gillian sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning as Humboldt Brewing outlasted the VFW Vets 17-16. Dave Keim Jr. hit two Humboldt homers. Rene Sanchez went 4-for-4 and Anthony Gonzales scored three runs for the Vets.
J.R. Brewski’s scored three runs in the seventh to tie the game, then turned two errors into one run to defeat Dan Keith Septics 12-11 in Men’s DD play Friday at Christmas Hill.
John Weberg hit a single, double and triple, while Dave Slater cracked a double and two singles for the Brew Crew. Zach Snyder, Rich Furtado and Rob Vantassel each went 3-for-4 for the Septics.
Matt Warren went 4-for-4 to lift Machinist Cooperative past Family Affair 12-5. Manuel Gonzalez scored twice for Family Affair.
Sara Alanis scored on an Alan Hazelberg single in the top of the seventh inning to earn Gaeta’s Taqueria an 8-7 Co-Rec B League win over Dee’s Nuts and Cherries Thursday at Gavilan. Tomas Carrillo scored three Gaeta’s runs. Grace Gonzales went 4-for-4 and Jeff Lopez tripled twice for Dee’s.
Torrance Blackman homered in a 5-for-5 effort as Krazy Koyotes topped Just For Fun 22-5. Erica Vargas went 2-for-2 for Just For Fun, the first-half Co-Rec C League titlist.
Greg Sosebee hit two homers ina 4-for-4 effort to key a 19-4 St. Mary Men’s Club win over Blackout Window Tinting in Men’s E play Thursday at Las Animas. Anthony Corral went 2-for-3 and scored two Blackout runs.
Rudy Diaz and Greg Renn each went 4-for-4 to spark the Titans past Ozzie’s Oddballs 17-7. Frank Duran hit a two-run triple for Ozzie’s.
Javier Armenta homered and Ray Garcia socked a homer, triple and single as Pray For Rain topped Solid Ground 19-4. Joe Lujan singled and tripled for Solid Ground.
