Dear Editor:

In Roger Rivera’s letter in The Dispatch Tuesday, the president of the United Food and Commercial Workers writes one of his most ridiculous and outrageous letters yet.

In it, Rivera challenges Amy Hill of Wal-Mart to entertain a “modest proposal” to let his caustic and lecherous union infiltrate her store and allow his union propagandists to manipulate, cajole, lie, cheat and steal in order to attempt to unionize it. Roger, I would bet you have never, ever owned an honest business in your life.

For you, with a straight face, to ask another business owner to relinquish control of its establishment to agents of a hostile, dishonest shady operation such as yours is the height of arrogance. Wal-Mart already has to tolerate your union’s incessant harassment and slander on an almost daily basis. Last spring, they couldn’t even stop you from bussing in hundreds of union thugs from San Jose with loudspeakers and “Wal-Mart Sucks” signs, and then taking over the entrance of Gilroy’s Wal-Mart. Your group harassed and intimidated shoppers and Wal-Mart employees alike. That is your way Mr. Rivera. That is the union way.

Your union has even tried to hijack our local city elections by forming a clandestine organization called Gilroy First! When it was uncovered that you had funded this so-called voter education and registration group, there were no apologies just more lies and deception. That is your way Mr. Rivera. That is the union way.

I’m sorry Mr. Rivera, you have shown yourself and your union to be disingenuous and dishonest and you have insulted my fellow Gilroyan’s intelligence and mine. Even Dennis Taylor was offended by your “poor judgment” and your “bone-headed decision” in the handling of the Gilroy First! lie. That may have been Taylor’s’ most intellectually honest column ever (Sept, 24, 2003).

Finally, I think it is time to make those candidates who were, in Peter Arellano’s words, “given birth by the union” pay for their affiliation with such a dishonest enterprise. These candidates thought they could pull the wool over our eyes, but it didn’t work. These candidates met and schemed at 6901 Church Street, home of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union hall a.k.a. Gilroy First! They are: Guadalupe Arellano, Peter Arellano, Paul Correa and Bruce Morasca. Let us send them a clear message on Nov. 4. Don’t let them hijack our city.

My pick’s: Mayor: Al Pinheiro. Council: Dion Bracco, Russ Valiquette, and Roland Velasco. These are all, solid, honest and straightforward public servants. Please vote for them on Nov. 4!

Mark A. Zappa, Gilroy
