Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Safe Night Committee 2003, we would like to thank the many dedicated and wonderful volunteers and sponsors who helped to make Safe Night 2003 a big success. More than 800 community residents attended the fifth annual Safe Night Carnival At the Park event held Saturday, Sept. 20 at San Ysidro Park.

Families had a great time enjoying an afternoon of diverse entertainment. It was wonderful to see the many kids and teen laughing and having fun using the bounce houses, rock climbing wall, and large fire slide, as well as getting their faces painted, watching the mysterious “Mad Science” experiments, petting the many friends belonging to My Pony Party petting zoo, receiving free balloons from the Sonshine clowns, watching Gilroy Youth Leadership’s performance of “Stompin!,” enjoying ballet groups from Gavilan College, Las Estrellas and Solisito, hearing the songs of Rosa Chihuahua and Gilroy’s own “Elvis,” and lastly, ending the evening with a spirited friendship dance with the Izcalli Aztec dancers.

At 5 p.m. that evening, Master of Ceremonies Len West, invited those in attendance to recite the Peace Pledge with both Mayor Tom Springer and Assemblyman Simón Salinas.

The committee would like to give a special thanks to Gilroy Wienerschnitzel for providing free hot dogs. Also, a special thanks to food chairperson, Judy Ornelas, who made sure the food operation, ran smoothly.

Lastly, a big thanks to the generous supporters and volunteers: Gilroy Gang Task Force, Gilroy Foundation, Cal Pine Con Agra, Gilroy Rotary, Gilroy Veterans of Foreign War, Gilroy WalMart, Gilroy Police Department, Gilroy Family Resource Center, Blue Cross of Santa Clara County, Santa Clara County Restorative Justice Program, City of Gilroy Community Services, MACSA, FIRST 5 SCC, Community Foundations Silicon Valley, Rogers Lane, IOOF/San Ysidro Neighborhood Associations, Valley Star Screen SportWear, Gilroy Bible Church youth group, Gilroy Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, Braccos’s Towing, and the Gavilan College Puente program.

The purpose of Safe Night Carnival in the Park was to bring the whole family together to enjoy the community spirit of Peace and Goodwill. By the end of the night, from the looks we saw on hundreds of faces, we strongly believed that our mission was accomplished.
