at Hollister Co-ed Relays
HOLLISTER – Senior Brian Lopez led his four-person team to two gold medal performances Saturday at the Hollister Co-ed Relays – which signaled the opening of Gilroy High’s track season.
The co-ed format has two boys and two girls on a team. Lopez was teamed up with freshman Robert Best, sophomore Sierra Barroza, and junior Samantha Sicard.
In the shotput, Lopez registered a throw of 48 feet – which was a personal best for him – and Best followed with a 38-foot, eight-inch toss. Sicard strongarmed the shotput 33 feet and Barroza sent it 29 feet, seven inches. The team’s 149-foot, three-inch combined distance earned them first place..
“He’s doing great,” said head coach Guido Zvigne of Lopez. “He PR’d in the shotput. He’s doing great. He’s a real team leader.”
Lopez kept his gold medal pace in the discus with a monster toss of 144 feet, six and one half inches. Best released the discus 115 feet, while Sicard went 90 feet, six inches and Barroza went 81 feet. The garlic unit’s 431-foot, half-inch combined score was tops in Hollister.
“Our team is still building,” Zvigne said. “We still have people in other sports, playing basketball and wrestling.
Junior runner Alfie Resnigt was in first for his leg of the mile relay.
“The rest of team kind of filled in, getting a workout out of it,” Zvigne said.
The track team’s next meet will be March 14 in Saratoga at West Valley College. Gilroy’s opening T-CAL meet is March 27 at home against Salinas at 3:30 p.m.
