The Gilroy High boys tennis team won its sixth straight league
match Thursday.
Mustang tennis sweeps Hollister, 7-0
HOLLISTER – The Gilroy High boys tennis team won its sixth straight league match Thursday – sweeping through the Hollister line-up for a 7-0 road victory.
The Mustangs (6-1 in T-CAL, 6-2 overall) won all four singles and all three doubles bouts for the route and next will play host March 25 to North Salinas at 3:30 p.m.
Senior top singles Robbie Marques went to work on Hollister’s Glenn Morris – winning in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, while senior No. 2 Mark Heisy polished off Haybalers’ Mike Blake in three sets, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3. Senior No. 3 Jacob Pniewski powered past Perry Marks 6-1, 6-1, and junior No. 4 Mark Hsieh toppled Cameron Barker, 6-2, 6-3.
The top doubles tandem of Tomas Carrillo and Ray Rivera made quick work of Hollister’s Pablo Andrade and Isidro Trujillo, 6-3, 6-3, while the No. 2 duo of Anthony Christian and Peter Adams won convincingly, 6-1, 6-0. The No. 3 pair of Adam Smurthweite and Ryan McBrearty completed the sweep with a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) nod over Haybalers’ Dominic Aiello and Daniel Moyer.
GHS softball shuts out Salinas, 3-0
SALINAS – Behind senior ace Jenn Olvera’s one-hitter and a three-run third inning, the Gilroy High softball squad opened its T-CAL schedule on the road with Thursday’s 3-0 shutout victory.
Olvera (5-0 overall, 1-0 in T-CAL) also banged out two hits – including a triple – to lead Gilroy (5-2 overall, 1-0 in T-CAL) to its fifth win of the year and first league victory.
Sophomore Francesca Lopez also tripled, while junior catcher Bria DeLorenzo had a two-hit day.
Up next, the Lady Mustangs will continue its run in the Tournament of Champions on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Sunnyvale at Twin Creeks Sports Complex against Aptos.
