GHS softball takes third in Tournament of Champions.
SUNNYVALE – The Lady Mustang softball squad won its third straight game in the Tournament of Champions – edging Aptos by a 1-0 final score – before being hit with a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Carlmont.

Gilroy opened its Saturday games against Aptos in the quarterfinals and one run in the bottom of the fifth inning was the difference. The decisive frame started with senior third baseman Cherise Martinez working a base-on-balls and moving over to second base on a wild pitch. Senior outfielder Laura Hennessee’s single then drove Martinez home for the only run of the game.

“It was a good game. The girls played excellent,” second-year skipper Julie Berggren said. “We played really good defense.”

The Lady Mustangs managed three hits and committed no errors, while Aptos recorded five hits but no runs off senior ace Jennifer Olvera.

In the semifinals against Carlmont, Gilroy’s solid defensive unit had an off night and the Mustang bats could not connect – leading to the lopsided final result.

“We were plagued by errors and we had no offense to help us out,” Berggren said.

Up next, Gilroy (1-0 in T-CAL) will bump heads with rival Hollister in a March 26 road game at 3:45 p.m.SUNNYVALE – The Lady Mustang softball squad won its third straight game in the Tournament of Champions – edging Aptos by a 1-0 final score – before being hit with a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Carlmont.
