DEAR EDITOR:
Tell me where have all businesses gone from Monterey Street? If
you look around you will find a lot of empty buildings and antique
stores
– and we sure do not need any more.

As a longtime resident of this community, I have seen thing come and go. The one thing I don’t want to see is huge Wal-Mart Super Store. We already have a Wal-Mart! Now really do we need a bigger one? Think about it. As a resident of Gilroy I am writing to express my opposition to the construction of a Wal-Mart super center in our community.
You know that if that big company gets in it is going to have an impact on not only the quality of life, but the quality of air we breath. There will be traffic jams and a particularly strong impact Highway 152 where people are getting out of work from ConAgra and truckers are leaving Golden West Restaurant. Plus, it has been shown repeatedly that Wal-Mart has the overall effect of reducing living standards in the communities it enters. Any sales tax revenue realized by the city will be short term and, for the most part, taken from the other Gilroy area stores ( P.W. Market, Nob Hill, Safeway and Arteagas) and all the little mom and pops stores in town.
