Only one day left to nominate Gilroy Educator of the Year

GILROY – The Economic Development Corporation has announced its upcoming seventh annual “Educator of the Year” award. The award is designed to recognize an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution within the educational community of Gilroy. Any person who has been involved with the public/private educational arena for at least one year is eligible.

The award will go to the individual who has demonstrated exceptional motivational skills with measurable results, demonstrated innovation in program development and implementation and has received recognition and respect of peers and/or student body.

The recipient of the award will be honored and receive a $1,000 check.

Nomination forms are available at Gilroy schools, the Gilroy EDC office, 7471 Monterey St., or by calling 847-7611. All nominations must be received by Nov. 7.

Dog wash fundraiser

GILROY – The Gilroy FFA Chapter will be holding a dog wash and bake sale at Scrub-A-Mutt, 591 First St., on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Have your dog washed and groomed by students for only $10 and show your continued support of the Agricultural Science program at GHS. Christmas crafts fair

GILROY – St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, located at the corner of Broadway and Wayland streets, hosts its second-annual “Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair” on Friday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hand-crafted items such as jewelry, pottery, stained glass art, crocheted gifts, dolls and more will be available for purchase. St. Stephen’s ladies will host a country store featuring home-made salsa, breads and other goodies. Lunch, including hot dogs, chili, corn dogs, nachos and soft drinks, will be offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free to the public. Details: 842-4415.

Be a Bonfante Gardens star

GILROY – Paramount’s Great America in Santa Clara and Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park in Gilroy will hold open auditions in the entertainment department for the 2004 season. Auditions are open to applicants ages 15 years and older. Both theme parks are looking for enthusiastic applicants to fill a variety of seasonal entertainment positions, including show characters, singers, dancers and comedians. There are also plenty of opportunities to work off-stage or behind the scenes as stage managers, technicians, escorts and theater attendants. Auditions are:

• Saturday, Nov. 8 at Paramount’s Great America, Santa Clara, in the Paramount Theatre. Auditions for singers, actors, comedians and variety artists begins at 9 a.m. Dancers, characters/escorts, theatre attendants and technicians’ auditions begin at noon.

• Sunday, Nov. 9 at Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park, Gilroy, in the Bonfante Gardens Gymnasium. Auditions at 9 a.m. are for singers, actors, comedians and variety artists. Auditions at noon are for dancers, characters/escorts, theatre attendants and technicians.

Help the needy this holiday season

GILROY – The Salvation Army needs volunteer help for the holiday season. Volunteers are needed to:

Casino night for Gilroy Youth

GILROY – The Rotary Club will host “Casino Night” Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Portuguese Hall, 250 Old Gilroy St. Eat a steak dinner and help Gilroy’s youth at the same time. A ‘stinky’ group of poets

GILROY – The Fifth Annual South Valley Wedding & Special Occasion Showcase is returning to the Gilroy Elks Lodge. Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004. Holiday marketplace vendors needed

GILROY – Gavilan College students are organizing a holiday marketplace to be held on Nov. 20 through 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, on the Gavilan College Gilroy campus. The marketplace will provide an opportunity for local craftspeople and vendors to sell their wares and for the community to purchase unique, handmade items. Vendors are still needed. Supper Club dining, swing music

GILROY – The Exchange Club of Gilroy presents a big-band dinner dance and auction on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, at the Historic Strand Theater, 7588 Monterey St. Enjoy an elegant 1930s supper-club experience featuring the South Bay Swing Band.
