Dear Editor:

My husband and I just moved to Gilroy in April 2002. We have been subscribers of The Dispatch since then. I read it faithfully everyday. The article on the San Martin animal shelter (1/7/03), really was heartwarming and prompted me to write my first ever letter to you. We visited the shelter about a month ago, looking for a young dog to add to our family. We have no children, just our dogs.

It was heart wrenching to see these dogs, some so scared, some just hoping you would pay attention to them and take them home. We didn’t find the “right” one for us and when we left, I had tears in my eyes as I thought that many of them would be destroyed.

I had no idea that the shelter had a “mission” of not putting down any of their animals. Mr. Jewitt is truly a blessing for those animals. The euthanasia statistics you quoted were staggering and he deserves a big “THANK YOU” from all of the animal lovers in South County for doing his best to find homes for the unwanted.

Too many people carelessly give up or abandon their animals. They don’t take pet ownership seriously or realize the responsibilities they have as pet owners. They shouldn’t be just kept out in the backyard or given up when it’s no longer a cute kitty or puppy. Pets should be a part of the family and treated with dignity, respect and given our unconditional love.

Cheers to Scott Alexander, the young volunteer that was pictured. How refreshing it was to read of a 13-year-old boy who volunteered his time w/the animals. So many young people these days are too wrapped up in video games, television, etc. and it was wonderful to see him doing something meaningful. His parents should be proud of this young man!

This really is a great community to live in!
