Most long drivers hit the ball that way because they are set up in such a manner that hitting it a long ways comes naturally. I believe there are six key points to a proper driver set-up. If you have those points, you will probably hit the ball very long.

When a good players sets up to hit a tee shot, they start by taking a nice wide stance. The feet should be slightly wider that your shoulders. The ball should then be positioned off the inside of the left foot. This enables most of your weight to now be behind the ball. As a matter of fact, you should feel that 60-70 percent of your weight is on your right side. Your hands now should be directly above and right in line with the clubhead. Don’t forward press them so the shaft points at the front hip like an iron.

By placing the majority of your weight behind the ball onto your right leg, it becomes natural to have your head well behind the ball. With your head there the last piece of the set up falls into place and that is tilting the shoulders so the right shoulder is slightly below the left. This angle helps promote a sweeping motion unlike the irons which calls for a more downward strike on to the ball.

Because the ball is teed up, the angle will be shallow or ascending in order to strike and launch the ball nice and high.
