GILROY – A 5-year-old boy from Fresno was killed Saturday morning in a single vehicle accident on Pacheco Pass Highway two miles west of Dinosaur Point.

Chance Pullen, 5, was not believed to be wearing a seatbelt or placed in a child safety seat when the man he was riding with, 31-year-old Marc Mendez from Fresno, drove his 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix off westbound Highway 152 into a guard rail and a tree shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Pullen’s mother, 29-year-old Brande Pullen, was also in the vehicle, along with an unidentified 8-year-old. None of the other passengers in the vehicle suffered major injuries in the accident.

“There is no indication that substances were involved,” said Terry Mayes, CHP spokesperson. “And right now we’re not sure of the relationship between the two (Mendez and Chance Pullen).”

Mayes said the 8-year-old riding in the vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

“Right now the investigation is still under way,” Mayes said. “We don’t know why he went off the road, but for whatever reason he lost control.”
