Watching this week’s Major League All-Star game, I noticed a comment made by announcer Tim McCarver.
He mentioned that a certain player does something no one else in the game does while hitting, and that is swinging up at the ball.
All the players swing down at the ball, creating a nice tight backspin rotation of the ball upon contact which leads to line drives. Sure enough, during the replay you could see this player take an uppercut swing and ironically miss the ball.
This is interesting due to the fact that the same principles hold true when hitting a golf ball.
Hitting the ball on the downward arc leads to applying backspin to the ball. Backspin equals lift and carry which is what we all want the golf ball to do. Swinging up at the ball causes topspin which makes the ball dive into the ground and not fly.
So take a page out of the baseball book of hitting. Swing the golf club and strike the ball on the downward arc of the swing. This will add much more lift and distance to your shots.
Remember, when all else fails take a lesson, you’ll be surprised how much we can help.
