MORGAN HILL – The Fabulous Flappers, a local senior tap group, took its first attempt at a jazz dance number to the five-day “I Love Dance International Championship Convention” in Las Vegas this past weekend.

Facing the daunting competition of 12 dances performed by groups holding fast to their area of expertise, The Flappers wowed audiences at the Caesars Palace Ballroom and walked away with the second-place Trophy in the 40-Plus Category.

The winning dance, “She Works Hard for the Money,” was choreographed and directed by Phillip James of the Dance Unlimited Studio in Morgan Hill.

It was James who initiated the Flappers branching out to include jazz in their repertoire.

Three years earlier, he encouraged them to begin competing in the “I Love Dance International Championship Convention,” choreographing and directing them in a tap number, “A Wink and A Smile,” where they received First Place recognition.

In 2002, the Flappers, dressed in fairy costumes, again won first place, tapping to James’ version of “Bibbity Bobbity Boo”, from the movie “Cinderella”.

“She Works Hard for the Money” dancers include Marilyn Awbrey, as a cleaning lady; Carrie Billalba,as a construction worker; Jane Blissett as a nurse; Rita McCarty as a ballerina; Doris Menendez as a lady marine officer; Eunice Meyer as a glamour business women; Sandi Pitcher as a showgirl; Marian Scorsur as a lady of the night; Joyce Shepherd as a golfer; Gloria Strehlke as a waitress; and Sandra Leon as a vice squad cop.

More than 1,200 dancers competed in the competition, some coming from as far away as Canada, Austria, and Australia.
