GILROY – Room is still available for children to participate in STAR 2003. “Groovy” is a musical comedy tribute to the ’60s, which will be directed by Pepe Espinosa. This fun-filled summer program is presented by the Gavilan College Theatre Arts program for young people ages 8 to 15. Come and participate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Partial scholarships are still available for Session two which is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, to Saturday, Aug. 9, and costs $435. John Birch barbecue

Children dive into books

GILROY – The Wize Owl bookstore is holding a summer reading adventure now through Saturday, Aug. 16. Children from pre-kindergarten to eighth-grade can sign up at the store to receive their reading log. Each time they bring the chart into the store, the number of completed books will be recorded and children can choose a prize from the “owl’s nest.” Those who read 10 books by Aug. 16 will be entered in the grand-prize drawing for Wize Owl gift certificates. Wild summers at Coe park

MORGAN HILL – Enjoy an evening of nature stories on Saturday, July 26. Ranger Cameron Bowers will tell you stories he’s discovered in the wilds of Coe Park. This program is designed for kids and kids at heart. Bowers will lead games and offer prizes.

On Saturday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. challenge yourself to the Middle Ridge Loop Discovery hike. Dan McCranie will be lead and the hikers will decide how strenuous a trail they wish to take. Bring loads of water, snacks, and lunch.

That evening Dan McCranie will guide visitors in an exploration of the world of the beautiful, powerful and controversial mountain lion.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m., learn about the four seasons of Coe with Marlene Testaguzza.

The evening programs are held at the Visitor Center, starting at 8 p.m. and last about an hour. Details: 779-2728.

Wine appreciation 101

MORGAN HILL – Guglielmo Winery is offering this wine education series workshop on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 29, 30 and 31, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. These classes are designed to help participants understand how to taste and evaluate wines. Learn what all those confusing terms mean and what to look for when buying wines. Topics will include dynamics of taste and smell, characteristics of various wines and wine tasting and evaluation. Seating is limited, so make reservations early for one of the three nights. Cost is $15 per person. Guglielmo Winery is located at 1480 E. Main Ave., across the street from Live Oak High School. Customer service training

GILROY – There will be a free training seminar on Wednesday, July 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gavilan College Small Business Development Center, 8351 Church St., Building E. Participants will learn why customer service skills are so important, keys to high quality service, the ten deadly “sins” of customer service, tools for dealing with challenging customers, good customer service strategies and much more. Volunteer to be a shopping chaperone

GILROY – If you want to help children and like to shop, contact The Salvation Army Santa Clara County office and be a volunteer shopping chaperone at the 12th Annual Back-to-School Shopping Spree.
