SAN FRANCISCO – The Board of Directors of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, elected San Francisco 49ers Quarter-back Jeff Garcia, as a new board member. Garcia, a longtime supporter of HSF, has raised more than $250,000 through special events. He has hosted Celebration of Achievement events, regional receptions held to honor the accomplishments of HSF scholars, during which he awards scholarship checks in person and speaks to Latino students and families about the importance of a college education. The HSF is the nation’s leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education and has awarded more than 54,000 scholarships totaling nearly $89 million.
Women recover from fire
SAN MARTIN – One of two women rescued from a burning house in San Martin last Wednesday has been released from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and the other, whose condition was labeled as critical, has been upgraded to serious, according to a hospital spokesperson Monday.
Alice Olson, 98, and her daughter Betty Gardner, 73, were treated for burns and smoke inhalation at the SCVMC burn center in San Jose following the fire, which did $200,000 damage to their single-story home at 13150 Llagas Ave. Gardner suffered burns to 30 percent of her body, while Olson’s injuries were thought to be life-threatening last Wednesday, according to family members. Firefighters pulled Olson from home, and she was quickly lifeflighted to SCVMC.
Both women were sleeping when the house burst into flames. The South Santa Clara County California Fire District said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Grr-lic dog walk
GILROY – The Gilroy Grr-lic Dog Walk in the Park will be held on Sunday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at Christmas Hill Park. There is a $10 donation per pet. There will be photos, prizes, T-shirts, a look-alike contest and more. Proceeds benefit the San Martin Animal Shelter. Walkers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Details: 842-9348.

GILROY – Community Solutions will offer a workshop series called Families That Care. Parents will learn how to strengthen their bonds with their children and reduce the risk that their children will use drugs.
