Lady Mustang softball scores three in second for 3-1 win over
Acorns
MORGAN HILL – One inning was all the difference Thursday in the Gilroy High softball team’s 3-1 road victory over neighboring rival Live Oak.
In the decisive three-run second inning, the Lady Mustangs put runners on base with some heavy hitting and then capitalized on a pair of Lady Acorn throwing errors to back up senior ace Jennifer Olvera’s four-hit, six-strikeout shutout.
Senior third baseman Cherise Martinez led the inning off with a base knock and then senior first baseman Jenna Daugherty drove her home with a RBI double to rightfield off Live Oak starter Jackie Jacob – who lasted three innings and gave up only one earned run.
Daugherty came around to score on the first Lady Acorns’ throwing error as the catcher pulled up on her throw-back to the mound but lost her grip on the ball – which rolled through the middle of the infield. An opportunistic Daugherty scored all the way from second base to put Gilroy ahead, 2-0.
Freshman Kristen Campos kept the rally alive with a base hit and then forced another errant throw on a steal of second base. The catcher’s toss sailed high and into the outfield, allowing Campos to continue on to home plate.
The Lady Acorns finally got to Olvera in the seventh inning with Rebecca Dayton smacking an RBI double – but Gilroy’s cagey hurler closed the book on Live Oak after that.
Gilroy (3-1 in T-CAL) – which still has a make-up game with North Salinas on the horizon – is scheduled to host Salinas next for an April 9 home game at 3:45 p.m.
