Twelve-car pile up
PACHECO PASS
– A stalled semi-truck clogging up westbound Pacheco Pass near
Dinosaur Point during Monday morning’s rush hour commute resulted
in at least four separate accidents involving 12 vehicles.
The most serious injury in the pile up was a broken leg suffered
by a Los Banos woman who crashed her motorcycle.
Despite the heavy collisions, westbound Pacheco Pass never
closed both lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Cooking demonstration
GILROY – A Station 55 Restaurant chef will lead a cooking demonstration on Saturday, April 12, at 2 p.m. at The Wize Owl Bookstore, located at 8060 Santa Teresa Blvd. The public is invited to view the techniques of local chef Timothy Ralphs as he prepares several mouth-watering artichoke dishes. For inspired participants who wish to duplicate the dishes at home, selected cookbooks featuring the recipes will be available at the bookstore.
Ralphs, executive chef at Station 55 Restaurant in Gilroy, studied at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School in Paris, and has served at many fine restaurants in Europe, as well as under James Beard Award winning chefs Cory Shreiber of Wildwood Restaurant in Portland, Alex Stratta of Renoir in The Mirage, Las Vegas, and Joachim Splichal of Pinot Blanc in St. Helena. Before coming to Gilroy, Ralphs served as the acting executive chef at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite.

Bring the arts outdoors
GILROY – People of all ages who love art, crafts, music and outdoor festivals are invited to attend the first annual Expressive Arts Festival at Gavilan College. This outdoor festival on the beautiful Gavilan College Gilroy campus, located at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., will be a day for community enjoyment of the arts.
The festival is the brainchild of student Marta Sherwood, president of the Gavilan College Music Club, who wanted to provide a day for celebration and enjoyment of the arts and a venue for local musicians and artists to perform and exhibit. The daytime festival will run until the evening production of “Macbett” in the Gavilan College Theater on Saturday, April 12, from noon to 7 p.m. Admission to the festival and event parking are free to the public. Send off the Hendricksons
GILROY – Help the Krazy Koyote Bar and Grill send Russ and Nancy Hendrickson off with a big bang on Saturday, May 10, at noon. A buffet style meal will include teriyaki chicken, salad, rice, chile beans, garlic bread and a drink. Wine will be provided. Miss Gavilan Hills Pageant
GILROY – The Strand Theater in downtown Gilroy is the home for the 2003 Miss Gavilan Hills Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, April 12. The dinner show pageant will feature over 20 contestants from all areas of the state. Dinner will be provided by the staff of the Strand Theater, who will prepare their specialty of Southern cooking with a “salsa” flare. An after pageant reception will feature the salsa sounds of Mambo Tropical. Tickets are advance sale only and will not be available at the door. Wine tasting experience
GILROY – Solis Winery will hold its Cabernet Sauvignon Vertical Tasting on April 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Taste 1998,1999 and 2000 Solis Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Solis Winery will be tasting its 2001 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from the barrel and guests can purchase the same wine. Bottling was April 8 and they are holding some back for tasting. Earth Day festivities

Put out fires
