Gilroy high students finish high in ROV competition

GILROY – Three teams of MESA students competed in the third annual Monterey Bay Regional ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicles) Contest at Monterey Peninsula College on April 12. In the wind and the rain, nearly 50 teams competed in the high school and middle school categories.

The ROVs were designed to go through a maze and retrieve pvc T’s from a depth of 3 feet in the “Conservation Challenge.” There were 12 T’s placed around the maze and the teams had 12 minutes to retrieve as many as possible to gain points.

In the second challenge, “The Free Float,” teams had to have their ROV descend to a depth of 12 feet, remove a balloon from a holder, return to the surface, go back down to remove a second balloon and again return to the surface. Each team had a maximum of 12 minutes to complete the challenge and the score was based on time.

Teams went through a technical briefing where they described how and why they designed their ROV the way they did. They were also judged on team posters.

Nate Barmore, Steven Bennett and Nynette Sicairos placed second in the Free Float Challenge for the high school division. They also received the third-place award in the poster competition and retrieved five Ts for 22 points.

Joseph Liang and Clifton Hayes received fourth place for their poster.

Megan Hungerford, Jennifer Adam and Liseth Rodriguez also competed. Hungerford was the only member able to attend and successfully completed the Free Float competition.
