Saddle up with Range Riders

GILROY – The Gilroy Range Riders Cowboy Mounted Shooters are holding practice on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Horse Discovery Center located at 2440 Dryden Road. Practice will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Monthly practices are normally held on the first Saturday of each month. SVYO’s season two

GILROY – The South Valley Youth Orchestra begins its second season on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with its first rehearsal under new conductor, Joey Fortino.

Fortino, the band director at Gilroy High School, joins the SVYO as its second conductor.

The orchestra will rehearse from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Gilroy High band room. Prospective musicians, ages 10 to 19 should call for an audition appointment. All orchestral instruments are needed.

A holiday concert and an end-of–the-year concert will be held this season. Vince Gomez, who helped the orchestra get off the ground in 2002, will assist this season as a “conductor emeritus.” The orchestra includes youth from Morgan Hill, Gilroy and surrounding communities. Help run Safe Night

GILROY – Volunteers are needed to help with “Safe Night: Carnival in the Park,” a free community event which focuses on gathering people in the spirit of peace and goodwill. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20. There will be an informational meeting for volunteers on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 3:30 p.m. at the Gilroy Family Resource Center, 8833 Monterey Road. Volunteers are needed from 3:30 to 7 p.m. to help run kids activities, provide guidance and offer support. Volunteers will be given a free lime green Safe Night T-Shirt.

Tee off in the dark

GILROY – St. Mary School is holding a Nite Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Short Course at Santa Teresa Golf Course in San Jose on Bernal Road. Social hour will be at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and shotgun start will be at 7:30 p.m. Cost to participate is a $75 donation, and guests’ barbecue tickets are $20.

Individuals or groups of up to six are welcome. Proceeds benefit the St. Mary School Endowment Fund.

Tickets for ‘Blithe Spirit’

MORGAN HILL – South Valley Civic Theatre presents “Blithe Spirit,” a farce in three acts. Performances are running Friday and Saturdays at 8 p.m. through Sept. 13. There will be a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7. The play will be performed at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse at the corner of Dunne Avenue and Monterey Street. Free movie under the stars

MORGAN HILL – The Chamber of Commerce will host its second annual “Movie Night Under the Stars” at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center on Saturday, Sept. 6, at dusk.

The free event will begin at 4 p.m. with a family funfest featuring dance, martial arts and gymnastics demonstrations. Food, microbrew beers and local wines will be available. Kids’ activities including a three-story slide, jump house and crafts will also be on hand.

“The Sandlot,” rated PG, will be projected on an outdoor screen at dusk. The Community and Cultural Center is at Monterey and Dunne Avenue.

Join the midnight ride

MORGAN HILL – A moonlight guided horse ride and potluck will take place at Henry Coe Park on Saturday, Sept. 6. Bring water, a dish to share and your own horse and explore the southern end of Coe Park under the light of the silvery moon. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. followed by the horse ride at 7 p.m. Meet at Hunting Hollow entrance. Reservations are required. Caring volunteers needed

Child Advocates of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is looking for volunteers to mentor and speak up for abused and neglected children/youth who have been placed in the foster care system.
