DEAR EDITOR:

Look out, Gilroy, here comes … ohh, gosh … a groundswell!

It began following Dispatch writer Eric Leins words (Aug. 25) “a network of nearly 100 unions is endorsing …” The reality: South Bay AFL-CIO “leadership” endorsed four union drones seeking mayor/City Council positions in the upcoming election. Why? Gilroy’s drone squad supports the Holy Grail of unionism nationwide: evil Wal-Mart shall be bullied/threatened/intimidated/coerced in every action it takes until it submits to union demands/control.

Like all groundswells, support for its erroneous beginning was babbled Sept. 10 when Dispatch columnist silly Dennis Taylor, gushed “… the South Bay AFL-CIO is comprised of nearly 100 individual unions … collectively they support the candidates they perceive as being most concerned about … issues … organized labor is also concerned about.” Ohh, sure, silly Dennis! Are you so union-oriented you actually believe that, following file closing for Gilroy mayor/Council, The Cleaners and Service Personnel, Local Chapter 546, Alviso (and all other unions) immediately called an emergency members-only meeting, reviewed/interviewed all candidates and breathlessly told South Bay AFL-CIO they supported Gilroy’s four union drones? Instead, within one day of the announcement, the Gilroy Firefighters union, most familiar with the South Bay, AFL-CIO “leadership”– endorsed drones, renounced South Bay AFL-CIO’s endorsement. Why did they do that, silly Dennis? Admit it: most leadership within those nearly 100 unions, if asked, would probably respond: “What’s a Gill-roy?”

Yet the groundswell rolled on. Within a day of silly Dennis’ nonsense, South County Democratic Club announced its endorsement – three of the four union drones South Bay AFL-CIO “leadership” had endorsed. SCDC replaced South Bay AFL-CIO choice Mark Dover (whoever he is) with Bruce Morasco, an Albertson’s clerk in Morgan Hill. Why this sudden interest by SCDC in what they acknowledge is a “non-partisan” race? What did it offer as its reasons to endorse the union drones? Leadership qualities? Records of dedicated community service? Nope! In their announcement (Dispatch – letters – Sept. 11) they claim their choices “… would best represent Democratic Party principles …” since “SCDC bylaws limit endorsements to candidates … registered with the Democratic Party.” Now there’s a truly outstanding concern, and a real hope, for Gilroy’s future. Not only are their choices union drones – they have to be party hacks!

What’s next in this groundswell? Does Greenbelt Alliance have higher ideals behind its upcoming endorsement of its members?

Just goes to show: city politics can be fun.
