Boiler fire damages South Valley’s roof
GILROY – Damage caused by a small fire sparked by an overheated boiler at South Valley Middle School, 385 IOOF Ave., Monday is estimated at $5,000.
Pool Technician B.C. Doyle noticed smoke rising near the chimney of the vent around 10:20 a.m.
Once on the scene, firefighters extinguished the flames in about five minutes, Capt. Colin Martin said.
“We were lucky it was during the day when someone saw it,” Martin said. “If it had been at night, we probably would have had a building going up.”
The fire caused damage to the roof of the building in which the boiler was housed. Replacement of the chimney and repairs to the boiler-room roof will take about a week, according to Charlie Van Meter, director of facilities and maintenance for Gilroy Unified School District.

freak electrocution
HOLLISTER – Static electricity that built up over a power line is believed to be the cause of a 29-year-old man’s death Monday.
Darin Siegried, of Manden, N.D., was electrocuted at a construction site near Dinosaur Point on Monday when he touched an inactive power line.
Siegried was pronounced dead at the scene along the Santa Clara and Merced County lines, said deputies from both counties.
Investigators said the bizarre, deadly 3:40 p.m. accident appears to have happened when Siegried, who was part of a construction crew contracted by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, went to install a series of poles and high power lines.
While Siegried was holding a grounded pole, “he reportedly came in contact with a power line that had been de-energized,” Verderber said. “The line, however, released a large surge of static electricity and electrocuted him.”
Deputies said the incident appears to be accidental, and no foul play is suspected.
